Case study: Rose's story

After arriving in Sheffield three years ago, Rose started volunteering at two organisations: City of Sanctuary and Lesbian Asylum Support Sheffield. Though she loved working in her local community as a volunteer, her ambition was to secure paid employment.
In May 2025, Rose spoke to the Opportunity Sheffield team to find out how the Pathways to Work programme could help.
She was interested in working within the care sector, so Information, Advice and Guidance Officer Aline helped Rose update her CV to attract this type of employer. Rose came to realise that her wealth of volunteering experience had helped develop many transferable skills.
Rose found a Care Assistant role on Opportunity Sheffield’s jobs board which matched her skills and interests. She was supported to complete an application and was delighted to be invited to interview.
Before meeting the employer, Rose undertook interview training with Aline; this helped her make a great first impression and secure a job offer on the spot!
To help Rose look her best on her first day, she was referred to The Suit Works, a charity that provides professional attire for jobseekers who need smart clothing.
Rose said:
“I’m so happy, surprised and excited. I will forever be grateful for the support given to me!”
